Maiden’s Prayer Cocktail

The Maiden’s Prayer is a split base cocktail using both gin and light rum. I think a white rum works best here. The rum warms the gin and adds complexity to what would be a simple citrus drink. Another Jazz Age cocktail with roots in the roaring 20s, this drink is a testament to the innovative spirit of the Jazz Age great bars like Harry’s in Paris.
Its cognac based counterpart – the Between the Sheets cocktail also makes a sophisticated split base libation. Both the Maiden’s Prayer and the Between the Sheets are cousins to the more well known Sidecar.
Maiden’s Prayer Recipe
1 ounce gin
1 ounce light rum
1 ounce Cointreau
¾ ounce fresh lemon juice
1 teaspoon simple syrup
Garnish: orange or lemon twist
In a cocktail shaker combine the gin, rum, Cointreau, lemon juice, and simple syrup with ice.
Shake well.
Strain into a coupe or cocktail glass.
Garnish with orange or lemon twist.
Put on some jazz, shake up a Maiden’s Prayer or two and enjoy a terrific, lesser known classic cocktail.
Be sure to try the cognac counterpart Between the Sheets, and the more widely known Sidecar.
Cheers!

These are my favorite coupe glasses. They are a nice size (they easily hold a double recipe of a Maiden’s Prayer). And they look incredibly elegant. Use them for Champagne, or anywhere you would use a martini glass.

The perfect finishing touch. I love these classic hemstitched linen napkins. You can never have too many white linen napkins, and these come in an amazing assortment of colors to match any decor.
Norpro Stainless Steel Citrus Press
For the occasional cocktail I rely on my Norpro juicer. It’s a great heavy duty stainless steel and has lasted me many many years of drink making. It handles oranges, lemons, and limes easily – it’s a bit small for grapefruits. Perfect for the occasional Maiden’s Prayer.
Zulay Professional Heavy Duty Citrus Juicer
If you need to create plenty of juice with ease, the Zulay professional citrus juice press is our top pick for best manual citrus juicer. With a large sized juicing element this makes short work of any citrus – limes, lemons, oranges, and grapefruits. The large basket makes this one of the best juicers for grapefruit. It’s practically a cocktail machine!
The heavy cast iron construction not only adds stability to this countertop juicer, it adds weight to the pressing action making juicing easier. Rubber feet helps keep this juicer from sliding around. This is perfect for large capacity users, even suitable for bars, restaurants, and commercial use. The stainless steel juicing components are removable and dishwasher safe. Looking for the best citrus press? I feel this is one of the best you can buy. If you need a lot of juice I recommend the Zulay professional citrus juicer.
