Sangria is synonymous with good times. Easy to put together and even easier to drink, sangria is practically a party in a glass.
Warmer weather is an ideal time for sangria. A refreshing pitcher of fruit infused sangria is perfect for entertaining. You can make a lighter drink by filling an ice filled glass about halfway with sangria, and then topping it up with club soda.
At its heart, sangria is wine that is infused with fresh fruits and fortified with a bit of brandy. Triple sec adds a bit of sweetness and orange flavor. Rioja is a traditional wine, but feel free to use any red wine that you like. Wines with fruit and berry notes work best. Use fruit that is in season and that matches the fruit notes in your wine for the best results. Our recipe is more of a guide, feel free to tweak the fruits to what is available to you.
Sangria Recipe
2 750ml bottles red wine, like a Spanish Rioja
1 cup brandy
½ cup triple sec
Juice of 1 orange
Juice of ½ lemon, the other half sliced into rounds
1 orange, ½ sliced into rounds, the other half cut into small bite pieces
1 lime, sliced into rounds
1 green apple, cut into small bite sized pieces
1 pint strawberries, sliced
1 cinnamon stick
Simple syrup if needed
Club soda if desired.
Add the wine, brandy, triple sec, orange juice, lemon juice, the fruit, and the cinnamon stick to a large pitcher and stir to combine.
Taste and add simple syrup to taste if you want it sweeter.
Cover and refrigerate at least an hour to allow flavors to meld.
Serve over ice, with some of the fruit.
Top with club soda if you would like a lighter, sparkling sangria.
Feel free to substitute the fruits. The recipe is more of a guide. Use what you have and what’s in season. Citrus like oranges, lime, and lemon are great. Berries are always good, try raspberries, blackberries, blueberries. Stone fruits like peaches and cherries are terrific, just remove the pit and slice. Grapes are a natural.

Libbey Acapulco Pitcher
I love this style of pitcher for sangria. The lip that is designed to keep ice from pouring into your drink is perfect for keeping fruit from doing the same. This lets you add exactly how much fruit you want in your glass.
Stemless Unbreakable Wine Glasses
Reusable, shatterproof drinkware is an ideal match for a party. These plastic glasses are great looking, and can go through the dishwasher (top rack).
