The Stinger – a sophisticated pairing of warming Cognac and cooling mint. This Jazz Age drink came to prominence in society largely due to its being a favored libation by Reginald Vanderbilt. The Stinger’s refreshing nature makes it a great digestif and is the classic New York nightcap. The Stinger is making a comeback and is chic once again.
The Stinger is a shaken drink, so, ‘shaken not stirred’ is actually appropriate here. Serve it straight up in a martini glass, or over crushed ice in an old fashioned glass. I like to garnish with a small sprig of fresh mint leaves.
Stinger Recipe
2 ounces Cognac or brandy
¾ ounce white crème de menthe
Garnish: mint leaves
In a cocktail shaker combine the Cognac and crème de menthe with ice.
Shake well.
Strain into a cocktail glass or over crushed ice in an old fashioned glass.
Garnish with mint leaves.
Indulge in the sophistication and elegance that the Stinger exudes. Whether you’re sipping a Stinger at a classic cocktail lounge or mixing one up at home, its delightful blend of brandy and minty freshness is sure to please your taste buds and leave you feeling refreshed.
Cheers!
Make sure to try its vodka based cousin, The White Spider.

Boston Cocktail Shaker Set by A Bar Above
Shake up all your drinks in style with A Bar Above’s commercial quality shaker set. This has everything you need to get shaking: Boston shaker tins, Japanese style jigger, and a Hawthorne strainer. I love my stainless set – it can even go in the dishwasher.
Riedel Vinum Martini Glasses
The perfect size for this recipe. I love my Vinum martini glasses, they’re sturdy and have graceful lines. I photographed the Stinger with a Riedel Vinum Martini glass.
Riedel Double Old Fashioned Glasses
If you prefer your Stinger on the rocks I recommend the Riedel Double Rocks Glass. These make building a cocktail super easy as the lines at the bottom actually indicate a perfect 2 ounce pour. Filled with crushed ice your Stinger will stay chilled. I used this glass also in the photograph above along with the Riedel Vinum Martini glass.
White Linen Cocktail Napkins
The perfect finishing touch. I love these classic hemstitched linen napkins. You can never have too many white linen napkins, and these come in an amazing assortment of colors too. Linen cocktail napkins are always elegant.
